Queerness has become a personal philosophy in the work of Carl Voss, a philosophy of asserting a dynamic self. His work denies quiet, clean images, preferring an explosive, messy party. It is at all times a celebration. Carl Voss is attracted to, as artist Amy Sillman once said, “recomplicating the terrain of gestural, messy, physical,...” in her article on Abstract Expressionism and queerness. He embraces the messy, multiplistic, and dynamic. His work takes up space; it screams out in color, clashes and spills out in shape and space. It acts as a personal assertion, his queerness made manifest and refusing to back down into a picture plane.
